The back story

About The highlands: lakes, terraces and the botanic garden

The central highlands are the island’s cool heart: the crater lakes of Beratan, Buyan and Tamblingan at Bedugul, with the temple of Ulun Danu Beratan on the shore, the Bali Botanic Garden, and, to the south-west, the terraces of Jatiluwih, part of the UNESCO-listed subak landscape.

Getting there

By car and driver, north from the south coast or west from Ubud.

The lakes

Pura Ulun Danu Beratan on Lake Beratan and the Bali Botanic Garden at Bedugul.

Bring a jacket: the highlands are much cooler than the coast.

Jatiluwih

The UNESCO-listed terraces of Jatiluwih, with walking trails through the fields.

Our advice: combine Jatiluwih with Pura Taman Ayun at Mengwi on the way back to the south.
