Nyepi: Bali’s Day of Silence
Once a year, Bali falls silent. Here is what Nyepi is, when it falls in 2027 and how to plan around it.
Updated October 2026
A day of silence
Nyepi is the Balinese Hindu New Year, a day of silence, fasting and reflection. For twenty-four hours, from morning to morning, the island stops: no lights, no fires, no work, no travel and no entertainment. Village wardens, the pecalang, keep the streets clear.
The ogoh-ogoh parades
On the evening before Nyepi, each village carries its ogoh-ogoh, giant effigies of demons made by the young people of the banjar, through the streets to music, then destroys them. In 2027 this is the evening of Sunday 7 March.
If you are in Bali on Nyepi
Stay inside your hotel or villa for the day; hotels keep their guests fed and keep lights low. Don’t plan to arrive, leave or travel on the day itself, and check with your airline and hotel well in advance.
Indonesia’s Idul Fitri holidays fall on 10–11 March 2027, with collective leave days around them, so the island will be busy from the weekend before Nyepi into the following week: book early.
