Pura Tirta Empul, at Tampaksiring north-east of Ubud, is built around a holy spring that feeds a row of bathing pools. It lies in the Pakerisan watershed, the oldest known irrigation system in Bali, in UNESCO’s words. Dress modestly, with shoulders and knees covered and a sarong and sash; the inner sanctums are for worshippers only (the provincial guidelines for visitors).
