The back story

About Mount Batur and Kintamani: the caldera and the lake

Mount Batur rises inside a vast caldera at Kintamani, with Lake Batur beside it. UNESCO calls the crater lake the ultimate origin of every spring and river on Bali, and the Supreme Water Temple, Pura Ulun Danu Batur, stands on its edge.

The climb

Walkers climb Mount Batur before dawn to see the sun rise over the caldera.

The sunrise climb starts in the dark: go with a local guide.

The lake and the temple

Lake Batur and Pura Ulun Danu Batur, part of the UNESCO Cultural Landscape of Bali Province.

Our advice: bring warm layers for the summit; it is cold before sunrise.
