The back story

About East Bali: the mother temple, water palaces and the slopes of Agung

East Bali is the island’s quieter half: the regency of Karangasem, dominated by Mount Agung, with Besakih on its slopes, the royal water gardens of Tirta Gangga, the rice terraces of Sidemen, and a coast of black sand and fishing villages at Amed and Tulamben.

Getting there

By car and driver, along the coast road east past Sanur.

Temples and palaces

Pura Besakih, the mother temple, and the water palace of Tirta Gangga.

A long day by car from the south, or stay a night.

The coast

Amed’s black-sand bays and the USAT Liberty wreck at Tulamben, for snorkellers and divers.

Our advice: stay a night at Amankila or in Sidemen and see Besakih at opening time.
